WISCONSIN LUTHERAN COLLEGE ATHLETICS: Take 10: Away From The Game With Coach Julie Langebartels

Julie

Wisconsin Lutheran College Athletics issued the following announcement on September 21.

WLC Athletic Communications continues its Take 10 series by featuring coaches and staff from Warriors Athletics. Watch for a different feature every Monday.

Name: Julie Langebartels

Position: Head Women's Golf Coach, Assistant Women's Basketball Coach

Years of Service at WLC: 9

Alma Mater (Year): Wisconsin Lutheran College (2003)

When did you first know that you wanted to be a coach?

Growing up, my dad coached a variety of sports at Racine Lutheran High School and youth sports for my brother and I. I think coaching is just something I planned on doing from the time I was very young.

What coach has had the biggest impact on your life?

My dad has had the biggest impact on my coaching career. I grew up attending games that he was coaching and watched and learned from him. I still go to him with questions regarding my teams.

What do you consider to be your most memorable moment as a coach? As an athlete?

My most memorable moments coaching at WLC are advancing to the NCAA Tournament eight times. My most memorable moment coaching overall is having the opportunity to coach my kids in basketball and softball and seeing the joy they have for playing sports. As an athlete, my most memorable moment was winning the WIAA State Basketball Tournament in 1996-1997 and our team placing second in the WIAA State Golf Tournament in 1996.

If you could have any coach, past or present, as an assistant on your staff for one event, who would it be and why?

I would likely pick my dad to be my assistant coach. With his many years of experience coaching a variety of sports and his knowledge, I know he could continue to help me grow in my coaching and understanding. If not my dad, I would pick Klay Knueppel and his dad, Paul Knueppel, who have both taught me so much about sports and caring for the athletes on my team.

How would you describe your gameday demeanor?

Well, I guess this is somewhat different depending on whether it is basketball or golf! On gamedays, I am usually very focused and prepared. I try to set realistic goals for the games/matches in advance and try to help my players achieve those goals throughout the event. I suppose in basketball, I am more of a "rah-rah" fired-up coach before a game, and in golf, I try to stay calm and even-keeled to help eliminate the nerves of my players before that first tee shot!

What advice would you give your athletes today if they want to become a coach someday?

I think the best advice is to keep learning from other coaches and gaining valuable experiences assisting others whenever opportunities arise. As a young coach, it is easy to think you know a lot about the sport you are coaching. (I sure did!) Then you soon realize that there is so much to learn not just about the game, but about working with players and parents. Never be satisfied with where you are at. Continue to study, learn, ask questions, and shadow others!

What is the most effective selling point you've found in recruiting future Warriors?

The best selling point when recruiting is that WLC is a Christian school where people care about each other. Professors and students are friendly everywhere on campus, and it gives WLC a different feel than other schools. Obviously, the focus on building students into future servant leaders through the Christian programs on campus and athletic opportunities is a huge recruiting point for future Warriors.

Who is the most famous athlete you've ever met?

I can't say I have met too many famous athletes. My daughter plays basketball against Craig Counsell's daughter, and we have talked, but I am not one to run up to a professional athlete and ask for an autograph.

If you could coach one professional team for one season, who would it be and why?

I am not sure I would want to coach any professional teams, as I like coaching players who are solely playing for the love of the game! I do think it would have been fun to coach the Marquette women's basketball team a few years ago when they had a strong senior class of very skilled players and were successful in the NCAA tourney. Coaching seniors who have been in your program for four years is extremely enjoyable, and watching them strive to reach goals and even surpass goals makes coaching a lot of fun!

What are some of your hobbies outside of coaching golf and basketball?

Outside of coaching golf and basketball, I really enjoy spending time with my family. My four children are all into sports, and I enjoy coaching their teams and playing sports in the yard/driveway with them at home. We also like to travel as a family to National Parks, and my husband tends to find and challenge us on 20+ mile day hikes! Camping, hiking, biking, and canoeing with my family are my favorite hobbies outside of coaching.
