AACP announced its 2020 election results on Monday, Dec. 14. Cunningham was voted in as chair-elect of the organization’s Chemistry Section by his peers and fellow AACP members. He joins an esteemed panel of leaders who represent schools of pharmacy from across the U.S.
AACP is the national organization representing pharmacy education in the United States. Pharmacy is the third largest health profession in the U.S. with more than 300,000 clinicians practicing in community-based practices, hospitals/health systems and many other healthcare settings.
The mission of AACP is to lead and partner with its members to advance pharmacy education, research, scholarship, practice and service to improve societal health.
As chair-elect of chemistry, Cunningham begins a three-year term in section leadership, where he will progress to Chair and then Immediate Past-Chair. As section leader, Cunningham will be responsible for developing the programming that will be presented at the AACP annual meeting, networking across sections to develop interdisciplinary content, and guiding the future of the section that represents chemists at schools of pharmacy across the country.
Cunningham has served at Concordia since 2011. He holds a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from the University of Maryland. He is an expert in natural medicines, and his teaching interests rest in medicinal chemistry and drug design. Cunningham leads research efforts at Concordia that focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of analgesics, anxiolytics, and anti-addition agents. Students who work in the School of Pharmacy’s laboratory are exposed to the drug design and discovery processes, including new synthetic techniques and novel probe development.
