Tobey Neuberger, a resident of Cedarberg, expressed concerns regarding Susan Crawford, a candidate for Wisconsin's Supreme Court. Neuberger said that a judge should not "promise abortion rights when none exist," referring to Crawford's association with Planned Parenthood. She made her statement to MKE North News.
"The Supreme Court race in Wisconsin is of utmost importance to uphold the integrity of the law," said Neuberger, Resident of Cedarburg, WI. "It is not the duty or responsibility of a justice to promise abortion rights when none exist. There is no right to abortion in Wisconsin because an 1849 law says it is a felony to perform or assist in an abortion. Women and families deserve a better choice than a candidate whose job it is to protect life, in regards to the law, not end it in the violent and intentional act of abortion."
According to Ballotpedia, Brad Schimel, former Wisconsin Attorney General and Waukesha County Circuit Court judge, is set to compete against Susan Crawford, Dane County Circuit Court judge, in the upcoming Wisconsin Supreme Court election on April 1. The court currently holds a 4-3 liberal majority; however, Justice Ann Walsh Bradley's retirement makes the seat competitive. A victory for Crawford would maintain the liberal majority.
Crawford has said she will not recuse herself from abortion-related cases if elected, despite her past work representing Planned Parenthood and receiving an endorsement from the group, as reported by the Sconi. The controversy centers around Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion law, which the court will review post-election. Her opponent Schimel emphasized the importance of respecting voter decisions on abortion laws.
"Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin is proud to stand alongside a leader committed to reproductive freedom," said Tanya Atkinson, President of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin in a press release. "Judge Susan Crawford’s values align with the people of Wisconsin, and she is the right choice to be our next State Supreme Court Justice." Crawford has pledged to protect access to abortion and has experience as a prosecutor advocating for abortion rights.
Steve Cortes, Senior Political Advisor at CatholicVote, commented on Crawford and the Supreme Court race: "Susan Crawford is a radical on abortion, supporting the termination of an unborn baby right up until birth," according to the Green Bay Reporter.
